Skyships

Posted in Science on July 13, 2008 by Eathanu

Let’s face it: our universe is a dick when it comes to getting around. You could say part of this is because we don’t have powerful wizards who can magic up a very small fusion power generator that self-contains it’s explosive energies and results in just less than the power of a star’s reactions in something as small as the engine of your car. You could also say it’s because our universe is, like, a billion times bigger than that of Emaria’s, but I think I covered that a couple days ago.

Anyway! Skyships, as they’re called, are powered by these engines, and require little more maintenance than the occasional “it hasn’t exploded yet, right?” Of course, the wizards that craft these drives aren’t idiots, either. If something goes wrong, the drives are magically programed to shut down to prevent any leaking or explosions until the problem is fixed. If something goes terribly wrong, the engines also have a failsafe that teleports them into the nearest star, and lets it handle the problem (also, interestingly, increasing the star’s lifespan by about twenty seconds a pop).

Early skyship models used an open deck, much like normal ships (but more based one airships, which are basically the same thing as the skyships without the capabilities of escaping a gravity well). This form worked alright due to the large amount of breathable (if only barely so) air in space, but many of the star systems outside of Sirius lacked a dependable supply of essentian air. Eventually this design was axed and skyships were built with closed cabins and oxygen tanks (refillable from essentian supplies).

At about this time lasers were becoming the vision of a perfect weapon. Not lasers as we know it, of course. Emarion “lasers” are really just heated particle accelerators. You take a tiny shred of iron, heat it up to several hundred degrees (Celsius) and launch it, leaving a bright streak of Holy Crap Hot and large burn marks on your target. They make highly effective weapons and are quickly made to accept the user’s own essentia as a power source, allowing for some magic users to use hand-held lasers.

Cop-out ending because I don’t feel like writing any more. Damn right.

Anselm Skyerun

Anselm Skyerun

Anselm Skyerun

Few mortal men have been as revered within their own lifetime as was Anselm Skyerun. Anselm was raised by his Aerai mother and never knew his father until much later in his life. He was born in 83D and joined the Emarion army at the age of 35. In less than two years he had shown exceptional skill in combat training and leadership, and was given the chance to join the Paladins. He accepted, swore his oath of service to the gods first and the king second, and entered the Temple of Histan, and Bowed before the altar that held six swords, all different in form, but all enchanted with the same magics: complete holiness incarnated in a silver blade.

The altar had originally contained seven swords, the first being taken by none other than King Sirius Orillion himself. Every Paladin joining the service was sent into the sanctum to retrieve a sword, and if he emerged holding one it was taken as a sign that Histan wanted this to be his holy messenger. Anselm pulled one of the blades from the altar and looked into the face of Histan himself, who explained his duty as the leader of the Paladins and sent him out.

This understandably left people with high expectations of Anselm, and he lived up to nearly every one. Under his leadership the Paladins became the toughest part of the Emarion military, and he was truly put to the test in what became the most influential event in Emarion history: The Dragonian War.

During the War Anselm led the entire Emarion army, just barely holding the line against his foes. Eventually he was pulled from the front lines and sent as a diplomat to negotiate a treaty that would turn the war in their favour by gaining the help of both the Bangar and the Aerai. With the combined force of all three armies (though the Aerai didn’t have many soldiers, they were amazingly versatile and not at all easy to kill due to their ability to fly) the Emarions were able to push the Dragonians back all the way to their citadel on Mt. Hyjahl and eventually win the war. (more details will be provided in the Dragonian War article)

After the war Anselm continued to lead and train the Paladins for another seventy years. During the last twenty he did something unthinkable–he laid his sword to rest in the Alexandrian museum and picked up a dark sword. Going from a powerful leader of the Paladins to a Dark Knight, a smaller section of the army notorious for corruption caused by the fierce dark influence of the dark swords, understandably upset the king, the citizens, and the other Paladins, but yet Anselm still lead the Paladins as he always had.

Be it either by divine protection from Histan or simply his own inner divinity, Anselm conquered the darkness of his new sword and created a perfect inner duality of dark and light. He was once again revered by people and king alike, possibly even more so, and continued being a symbol of Emaria’s mighty Paladins until he retired at the age of 153. Anselm ascended to immortality twenty-four years later, leaving only one illegitimate daughter to his Aerain once-lover Dahlia Silinrius.

Black Skies

Posted in Science on July 9, 2008 by Eathanu

Let’s get one thing straight–the Emarion universe is not your universe. That is, space, that thang you can’t get to and even if you could is too vast and too vacuumous that getting there simply means having nowhere to go and having your interior made very violently into your exterior as the oxygen from your lungs is removed and dispersed, is nothing like that there.

Most will call it the black skies, the sky that exists beyond the sky. Because it is rife with essentia, the magical energy, it exhibits areas that are breathable and areas that aren’t. In the areas that aren’t there’s either a gas that lungs don’t process well (most of them) or nothing at all, because the area is bare of essentia. Most ships worth their weight in copper (that is, most of them) have sensors that know which is which, so some ships have open decks, as was the case with most early models.

Gravity is also a much stronger and more discriminatory force. Suns are not as big as ours, and even the smaller ones can maintain planets in their orbit. Planets typically range from much smaller sizes, mostly between 800km and 8000km radius (Earth’s radius is about 6,378km, and Jupiter is many times our size). These small planets have a stronger pull than ours would, with Azureus itself only having about a 3200km radius and just under one times Earth’s gravity. The difference in gravity on all these planets has a lot less to do with their size and a lot more with the composition of their atmosphere, with less dense gasses causing less downward pressure on people and objects. Azureus’ gravity is approximately 0.985g (98.5% that of Earth’s, if you couldn’t figure that out) and is more or less uniformal across the entire planet.

Essentian gasses, then, are not affected much by gravity (as you may have figured out if you’ve been following along closely) and aren’t pulled into suns’ or planets’ atmospheres while non-essentian gasses are.

This leaves the question of light, and FTL (Faster Than Light) speed. Light is instant. An Aerian child gazing at the star Arclouse will see the exact same thing as a Lyn mobster prowling the streets of the planet Ohego in the Oach system (these places are far apart, in case that wasn’t clear). This makes FTL speed non-existent, as nothing moves instantaneously unless teleportation magics are involved, and while space-worthy ships are heavily powered by magic, it isn’t so they move at light speed. That would be suicidal.

Next update: Either more on space or something from before space was reachable. So, basically, anything.

Sirius Orillion, sporting a fancy set of armour

Sirius Orillion, sporting a fancy set of armour

Emarion is the term usually used to describe members of the race, rather than people living in Emaria. Emarions are usually regarded as wise and charismatic, and make good leaders in any setting. These qualities established them as the dominant race on the planet, and eventually the galaxy, early on.

Thier kingdom, a constitutional monarchy, was founded in 412D when Lord Sirius Orillion united the Emarion people under his own banner. Due to his unrelenting courage shown during his many, many skirmishes with Goblin hordes, the majority of the Emarion people accepted his rule without question, and soon after he set up a balanced government, placing himself at one of the heads.

Emaria was ruled by a king, who made most foreign decisions, a judge, who would settle domestic disputes and work with the king on regular domestic rule, and an oracle, who could challenge the decisions of either to essentially place the decision in the hands of their opposite. While the position of king was entirely hereditary, the judge and oracle were both elected positions, changing every ten years. Orillion ended his rule in 298D, technically three days after his death.

Emarions can live longer than many races, up to three hundred of their years on the outside (Azurean years being only a hair shorter than Earth years) and most do not even die. If an Emarion dies when their body is mostly composed of the essentia (magic), they can become immortal. This is a lesser godhood that denies them the ability to interact with the material plane of existence, except through sight and sound. This immortality binds them to their general position on death, however, not unlike a ghost, but in the case of Azureus simply means they can’t leave the planet.

Many Emarions spend their lives pursuing a means to achieve this state of essentian infusion because the alternative, death, is not exactly pleasant in this universe.

Emarions are typically divided into two subraces: Northern Emarions from Alexandria to Port Avalon and Fort Dragonia in the north, who are normally fair-skinned with brown, blond, or white hair and blue or green eyes; and southern Emarions from places like Dali and Destinye in the south, who are darker-skinned with almost uniformily white hair (and some blond exceptions), but a wide range of eye colours. Of course, both are found anywhere in the kingdom and beyond, but they’re clearly the Emarion majorities in their regions. Emaria’s capitol has always been Alexandria, and understandily so, considering its central location in the kingdom.

No idea what’s coming in the next update.

Histan

Posted in Religion on July 5, 2008 by Eathanu

Histan is known as the Creator God. He was the god who essentially created most of the sentient races on Azureus. Soon after Youle disappeared, Histan decided that he would look into creating new life. Because the greater gods were (slightly) limited, he needed a basic being to work off of. He chose to take humans, and altered them to his desires. The result he called Emarions, and he placed them on the less populated continent of the two, Viridia. They were made to be well-rounded people, but more charismatic and wise, and they quickly organized themselves and created language, the birth of an empire that would become the most powerful people in the known universe.

From the Goblins of Viridia and Crim, the larger continent, he created Orcs, a taller, more powerful race, who did not integrate well with society, and Kobolds, a race based on both goblins and canines, some of whom eventually found their homes in society, specifically in Emarion port towns, where many reside.

For a few centuries Histan was happy with his creations, as they all filled vital roles in his view of the world. Soon Humans, who had previously only existed on Crim, mastered sea travel and two relatively peaceful factions journeyed across the ocean to Viridia, leaving behind their far less stable home. The Lyn, a warrior faction known for its master swordsmen, landed on the cold shores near the mountains in the northwest and founded a colony that would become their main stronghold for centuries to come. The Dragonians, a more tribal, dragon-worshipping faction, settled in the north and northeast of Viridia, forming many camps in the mountains and deserts.

Eventually Histan decided he wanted to create a few more creatures on Azureus before looking into other worlds. Becoming bold in his abilities, he designed another race from the Emarions, drawing inspiration from salamanders and dragons, and when he was finally done had the Bangar, a race of people resembling lizards who led a tribal culture in the southwestern swamplands, and did so comfortably for several decades before building their one and only city of Bangarash.

After two more attempts at goblin incarnations that would integrate with society, he decided he would never do as well as Kobolds and moved back to Emarions to create his final race on Azureus: the Aerai. They were a winged race with the magical ability to fly, and most spectacularly they had a higher range of diversity than anything he had created, yet were reasonably stable and were almost immediately accepted by Emarions as something of a sister race.

Happy with his work, Histan moved onto other planets in the region before returning to Azureus.

Genesis

Posted in Religion on July 4, 2008 by Eathanu

First, a short note on religion. In the context of Emaria, all of this happened. There is no “maybe” or “I believe this happened.” The gods themselves have confirmed just about everything I’m going to post under this topic. Moving on.

In the beginning, the universe was a singularity, and a powerful deity (henceforth known as Youle) decided he wanted more for this universe. In an instant that singularity became the Emarion universe, but it was a lifeless void with chunks of rock and gas just floating around each other. He picked one of those rocks at random, one that would eventually be called Azureus, and created two different types of life forms that he placed in two different parts of the land: Humans and Goblins.

He hoped the two species would grow to be intelligent on their own and moved on to creating other life, the plants and animals that inhabit the world. Once he was satisfied with that planet, he went elsewhere, populating a few other planets with life. Once he was happy with his creation, he decided to move on elsewhere, but before he went, he created eight beings to maintain the universe in his absence. They became known as the Greater Gods.

After Youle left this universe, he was never seen or heard again. No deity can confirm anything about him, and he possibly the only aspect of Emarion genesis that is open to speculation.

The next post will detail the contributions of the god Histan to the world.

Hello world!

Posted in Uncategorized on July 4, 2008 by Eathanu

Eh. I’ll keep the title the way it is.

Anyway! If you’re reading this within the first couple weeks it’s posted, you’re probably a close friend or relative. Um, hi!

As of now, you might notice a total lack of content. This is intentional. It’s known as “not having prepared anything and just kind of writing articles as I get bored enough to do them.” It’s a major writing technique used by most successful writers. Probably.

Go ahead and read the about page (it’s over on the right of the main page) if the title graphic doesn’t clue you in enough on what this site will be about! Really, the emphasis is on the Emaria dealie. Most of you (hopefully) won’t really give a damn about my personal life, so I’ll keep those posts few and far between. Or not. It all depends on what I feel like writing on any given day.

Emaria, An Introduction

Posted in Emaria on July 4, 2008 by Eathanu

So, you’re probably wondering something along the lines of, “what in the steaming red hell of a puppy’s worst nightmares is Emaria and why should I care?” Or you know, and you’re just humouring me.

Emaria is a fictional universe I created for the purposes of my two hobbies: writing, and making computer games. This site will only really deal with the former, since I go in and out of the RPGMaker series of programs faster than The Rolling Stones went in and out of… well, let’s just say it’s fast.

Emaria started pretty small, as a single country of the same name with some rather generic fantasy ideas, but since then has evolved into something I’m really proud of, with a history ranging from the creation of the world to the end of the universe. Mostly I’ll be focusing on the stuff that currently applies. I may start going over the history of the world later on, but now I just want to get the current canon out there.

Being more precise, Emaria is what I call the universe, but not at all what the people would call it (they call it the universe, obviously). Emaria is also a nation on the planet Azureus that developed into a large galactic government as time went on. Emarions are the race of people that inhabit that nation, and they share their home planet with other races, who eventually fanned out across the galaxy and made their own governments on their own planets.

Little else can be said without going too far into detail, so in my next post I’ll talk about the very beginning of the universe and the gods involved in shaping the world. Probably.
