Universe Map

The Universe

The above is a map of the Emarion universe, as far as the stars have been decided on at this time. There are more stars and planets in that cluster, such as those that contain the homeworlds of other sentient species, but I haven’t determined enough of those to warrant adding currently planetless stars. You can click to get the full picture, which is 1280×1024 image, perfect for a regular-width desktop background. I made a widescreen one myself, but hell if I feel like posting that up as well.

I did all of this myself in The Gimp, using the Freya Neu font for the text, and a filter I downloaded from the Gimp registry that basically made that star background for me. I initially had all of the map elements separated into layers, which was really cool because I could toggle them at will, but I managed to save over that with a file that has the background, the nebulae, and everything else. Not exactly as cool.

So, there will be a version 4 of this map (versions 1 and 2 were mostly testing to see how everything would work) and it will mostly be a recreation of this, unlike the other two where I had haphazardly placed the stars, not worrying about grouping them by political boundaries.

First, though, I’m working on up-close views of the stars, not scale models of the star systems, but stylized versions that are appealing to the eye. Sirius is up first, then probably Fuu’u’ll, and so on. Once I’ve finished I want to put the whole thing into one nice little program that will allow you to click on stars to being up the solar system, click on planets to bring up a map of the planet and basic information, and stuff like that. I’ve already finished most of Mantra, the first planet in the Sirius system, and I’ll post the information and images of that once I find out where I want to put the images. Iunno, I might just jpeg them and stick them on here for simplicity.

Anyway. Now y’all (all… two of y’all?) know what I’ve been doing all this time. Rather, I’ve been lazing off and trying to get my college shit taken care of, but I did this map over like a one-week period.

Check back soon for a page on Mantra.

Emarion Font

Posted in Uncategorized on September 22, 2008 by Eathanu

At long last, here it is: a truetype font in the Emarion language. This took one evening, and is only the first of possibly two or three versions, which I hope to follow up on in the attempt to make it presentable in all cases. As of now this font is usable, but it looks really bad in smaller font sizes. This is because I’m really bad at this, plain and simple. I did this in one evening with an unregistered version of FontCreator and am more or less happy with it for the amount of effort used. Like I said, it is more or less a work in progress.

Download it here.

A few notes about the written symbols themselves; First and most obvious, there is no letter ‘c.’ Emarion makes no distinction for that letter as we know it because all of its sounds can be pronounced with other letters. A soft C is an S, a hard C is a K, a Ch is seldom used, but nevertheless present in a Tsh. Second, most of the letters are in fact from the Latin alphabet. Just like the spoken language, Emarion is heavily influenced by the Latin letters as well. I’ve been told it also resembles Russian, which I can agree with. Finally, it uses Arabic numbers, which are not the actual numbers used by Emarions. The reason I haven’t changed it is that I have yet to decide how they do their numbers. Suffice to say I’ll probably use something other than base ten numbering anyway, so I’ll have to figure out how to work that into it on a keyboard.

The spoken language, the words and grammar, will hopefully also come some day, but that will take much more than one evening.

One final note: I checked just now, and it looks okay with sizes above 14pt. Anything below looks like shit. I’ll try to amend that whenever I get the chance.

Monkeys Love Monkey Chow

So. First thing of note: I may need professional help. This will become clear in a moment.

See, I decided to do a bit of fan art for this guy about his comic, specifically this one. Specifically the little notes thing that you get if you click Show Notes at the bottom. See that thing about monkey chow? Oh, I was all the fuck over that:

Monkey Chow brand monkey chow

Monkey Chow brand monkey chow

That was done as a replacement texture for the flour bags in Oblivion. Granted, this idea came during that day I went without sleep, so maybe the reason it was so funny at the time is clearer.

This is what I do with my free time. Oh, and since I couldn’t find a damn e-mail address to send it to, Chris hasn’t actually seen it, so I basically have to hope he investigates the trackback I sent.

Wouldn’t hurt if you all click the link a half dozen times each, either.

Update: I took a shot of it in-game with lighting and bump maps and stuff added. Thar be one:

More Chow

More Chow

Update 2: Snnkkk… Download it here
To install just extract it into your Oblivion folder. It’ll overwrite the flour bags in game, so to get those back, just delete ingredflour.dds in the textures/clutter folder and it’ll automatically revert (I like bsa’s, don’t you?)
Obviously if you just want it for laughs and have downloaded anything that replaces your flour bags already, you’ll want to back that ingredflour.dds up first. Again, apologies for the uploading site, but it’s at least more permanent than Rapidshare.

Hello world!

Posted in Uncategorized on July 4, 2008 by Eathanu

Eh. I’ll keep the title the way it is.

Anyway! If you’re reading this within the first couple weeks it’s posted, you’re probably a close friend or relative. Um, hi!

As of now, you might notice a total lack of content. This is intentional. It’s known as “not having prepared anything and just kind of writing articles as I get bored enough to do them.” It’s a major writing technique used by most successful writers. Probably.

Go ahead and read the about page (it’s over on the right of the main page) if the title graphic doesn’t clue you in enough on what this site will be about! Really, the emphasis is on the Emaria dealie. Most of you (hopefully) won’t really give a damn about my personal life, so I’ll keep those posts few and far between. Or not. It all depends on what I feel like writing on any given day.
